This commissioned series of sculptures asks artists to confront today's socio-political contradictions through works that transform waste into challenging public interventions. The project seeks to prompt festival goers to reconsider their relationship with consumption, waste, and the manufactured environment.
The life size sculptures are built using recycled/ reclaimed material collected by Team Recycling and SEF participants over the 3-year duration of Project SEF. Inspired by the ‘Junkmen’/ Trash Transformers of Kinshasa, Congo, these works reinvent the future of trash.
Where to find them:
Three are placed at the Village Green, namely uSgubu aka Container-man, Muck a Tin, and Cone Head.
Two, Amanzi and Hope, are placed between The Albany History Museum and the Albany Natural Science Museum on the corner of Somerset Street and Lucas Avenue.
And the final Purch Garbo Goyle, Muck a Quin, is outside the Rhodes University Drama Department, on the corner of Somerset and Prince Alfred Streets (which is an extension of New Street).
The two walkabouts will meet at the Albany History Museum.
