Internationally-recognised recording drummer Sphelelo Mazibuko gives audiences a glimpse of his debut album, FACES, after 13 years of working as a sideman in a variety of ensembles and genres. FACES explores the connections between styles and musical expression, focussing on themes such as Love, Peace, Healing and Africanism in a depiction of the multi-faceted – and multi-faced – nature of our world. Mazibuko – affectionately known as ‘Lelo’ by his jazz colleagues – studied Music at UKZN and has become a first-choice drummer for musicians as diverse as Dorothy Masuka, Sibongile Khumalo and Kyle Shepherd. ‘I pray,’ he says, ‘that this music can be more than notes: may it heal and leave you with positive vibrations.’
