Over the past four decades, jazz has become a fixture in the Music departments of all of the major universities around the country and each university jazz department offers a unique angle on the teaching of jazz. The universities also harness and embody the cultural nature of the societies in which they are embedded. The hubs of South African jazz are in our two biggest cities – Johannesburg and Cape Town – and the jazz that emerges from the two reflects the diversity of our cultural heritage. Catch jazz bands from the universities of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and Cape Town (UCT) to get a sense of how that diversity is captured by their young musicians.
