Trumpeter Robin Fassie may have been born into South African musical royalty – he is the nephew of Afro-pop legend Brenda Fassie – but he’s paid his dues to claim a spot on this performance stage. He is one of the 22 professional musicians on this year’s programme who have been selected for one of the national bands, having performed in the 2011 National Schools Band and the 2014 National Youth Band. He studied jazz at UCT as well as the University of Norway, Grieg Akadameit and was awarded the Berklee Music Online Scholarship. He has recorded, performed and toured with musicians as diverse as Nduduzo Makhathini, Thandiswa Mazwai, Bokani Dyer, Jimmy Dludlu, Beatenberg and Black Coffee and has produced his own recordings in both Norway and South Africa. This work seeks to explore concepts and ideologies of FLOW, being able to fully let go and submerge yourself within the music as a form of surrendering, using improvisation as a point of departure.
