‘You know,’ explained Carlo Mombelli, South Africa’s bass guitar wizard, ‘these guys are incredible – they even played with Stockhausen! But their music is perfectly square. And my music is in the circle, you know, so what we’re trying to do is to put the circle and the square together!’
Despite differing musical backgrounds, emotional depth is what unites the artists in this collective through ritualistic, meditative repetition and auditory climaxes in their compositions. Central to the project is Siegfried Kutterer’s unique collection of Balinese gongs, offering rich tonal possibilities and inspiring the project’s harmonic and melodic direction. The collaboration fuses Kutterer’s percussion and compositional techniques with Carlo Mombelli’s improvised and self-composed bass work, resulting in a deeply original and personal performance and a cornucopia of sound and expression.
