Integral to processes of science and art are tensions of entropy and order, and predictability and surprise. This work moves between a rational mind’s need to unravel the powers and mysteries of the natural world and moments of acquiescence when the mind accepts its limited computational skills to simply marvel at the unexpected.
Each piece in this collection is unique – the result of experimental dyeing with leaves, bark, roots, berries and lichens; which are further transformed by processing with different found metals.
This exhibition is located at Handmade Coffees | Old Gaol | 40 Somerset Street
Daily entry to the exhibitions is free and no booking is required.
Artist Biography
Ingrid Schudel is an associate professor and researcher at Rhodes University focusing on science and environmental education. She learned the process of natural dyeing during an apprenticeship in the Greek Village of Zagora in the 90s and continued experimentation with dyeing of local Eastern Cape plants on her return to South Africa in 1995. Ingrid is also a self-taught macro photographer and has exhibited at the National Arts Festival and the GFI Gallery, Port Elizabeth.
She integrates artistic expression into her teaching (environmental, primary, natural science, geography and technology education) with a view to enabling inter-disciplinary explorations of real-world environmental complexities, especially at the cusp of art and science.
