Makhanda Igwijo Competition | A Celebration of Youth & Song
National Arts Festival, Mandela Bay Theatre Complex and EC DSRAC

The Makhanda Igwijo Competition is an exciting platform for young people between the ages of 15 and 21 to showcase their talent and passion for music. As a nation that sings through every moment of life be it in celebration, unity, or remembrance we recognise the power of Igwijo as a form of expression.

This competition brings together enthusiastic, dynamic, and talented young individuals who will compete through song for incredible cash prizes. Audiences can expect powerful and heartfelt performances, as participants channel their emotions and stories into traditional and contemporary Igwijo melodies.

Adding to the prestige of the competition, the judging panel will be led by none other than The Soil, the globally celebrated South African acappella group. Founded in 2004 in Soweto, The Soil has become an icon of Kasi Soul, blending contemporary township styles with jazz, hip-hop, and indigenous rhythms. The trio comprising lead composer and founder Ntsika Fana Ngxanga, beatboxer and co-founder Luphindo Ngxanga, and singer-songwriter Theo “Songstress” Matshoba brings their expertise and passion for music to this competition. Signed under Native Rhythms with an exclusive license to Universal Music Group (SA), their harmonious sound and dynamic performances continue to inspire audiences worldwide.

Join us in celebrating the voices of our youth and supporting them as they express themselves through the rich and soulful tradition of Igwijo. Let’s uplift and inspire the next generation one song at a time!
