Igazi Lase Senqu II (R5 Cow)
Pioneers Arts Movement
Theatre / Centenary Hall

This production is set in the late 1800s just after the events of the Senqu (Orange River) Wars, which were fueled by the Mfecani and their struggle for the land on the western side of the Drakensburg mountains.

AbaPhuthi creates a peace treaty with the BaTlokwa, AmaHlubi and AbaThembu who had moved into the region, running from the British Colony. The peace treaty doesn't last long however as there are some collaborating with the British to displace and murder leaders.

Peace is disturbed once more when the British introduce the monetary system through the Taxation of Households. Cattle owners are forced to sell their cows in order to make this payment, or face the might of the British.

British colonial authorities introduced taxes (like hut and poll taxes) that had to be paid in cash, forcing Black households into a money-based economy. Since many people relied on cattle rather than cash, they were pressured to sell their cows cheaply or seek wage work. If they didn’t pay, they faced punishment from the colonial government—so the R5 cow sale began
