About the Artists
Masai Sepuru is an acclaimed South African multidisciplinary artist—poet, playwright, musician, visual storyteller, and theatre-maker—born in Makgofe village, Limpopo. His work pulses with African spirituality, township life, existentialism, and post-apartheid narratives, fusing words, sound, visuals, and performance. After moving to Pretoria to study Performing Arts Technology at Tshwane University of Technology, he graduated in 2016, sparking his commitment to blending poetry and theatre. Sepuru rose to prominence in the spoken-word scene, headlining platforms such as Hear My Voice, Word N Sound, Black Labone, and Poetry Africa (2020, 2023, 2024). He uniquely held South Africa’s two premier slam titles simultaneously—Word N Sound (2018) and Tshwane Speak Out Loud (2019)—alongside six-time Word N Sound “King of the Mic” and inaugural Speak Child Slam champion.
His poetry, featured in Years of Fire and Ash: South African Poems of Decolonisation (2021), interrogates decolonisation, free will, and redemption, with works like Sonless Fathers gaining acclaim. As director of Views Avenue, Sepuru bridges fringe and mainstream arts, producing poetry showcases, workshops, and theatre works with platforms such as Scribe-Rites, Poetoria, and the Mzansi Poetry Academy. His stage credits span the South African State Theatre, Market Theatre, and Joburg Theatre, with notable works including Morongwa (2019), It’s All the Sane, Blurred Lines, and Toxic. Recent highlights include the trilogy Exodus and The Tragedy of Samuel Omunye (2024), which earned Naledi Theatre Award nominations and an Ovation Award at the 2025 National Arts Festival, alongside Dark Magic (2025), a celebration of African spirituality.
