Down Second Avenue is a powerful one-man stage adaptation of Es’kia Mphahlele’s acclaimed memoir, exploring his journey through childhood, identity, poverty and racial oppression under apartheid South Africa. Performed by Marcus Mabusela and directed by Mosehlana Mamaregane, the play follows Eskia’s experiences growing up between the rural village of Maupaneng and the bustling streets of Marabastad’s Second Avenue. Through storytelling, poetry, music and physical performance, the production captures the humour, pain, resilience and spirit of Black South African communities fighting to preserve their dignity in a deeply segregated society.
