This dance drama makes extensive use of the sari as a piece of clothing, to illustrate joy, the longing of separation, warmth, new birth, protection, grief, and even as an object of death.
This production also portrays the physical hurt, stigmitisation, brutality and emotional trauma visited upon sugar plantation workers by colonial bosses.
In the hope of living to see another day, the workers were submissive and yielding to their masters' excesses, and would respond to orders by timidly uttering, 'Sari Sir'. Thus the title, Sari Sir, links the Indian garment for all seasons to the phrase denoting surrender by humble, modest, passive souls.
The aim of Sari Sir is to honour the resilience, pain, and dignity of Indian women who arrived in South Africa as indentured labourers, while celebrating the timeless beauty of Bharathanatyam - a classical Indian dance form that embodies spiritual storytelling, cultural memory, and artistic excellence. This is a story of Indians told through Non-Indian South Africans
