remnant
Tumble Inn Productions
Dance & Physical Theatre / Rehearsal Room
Through the silent echoes of grief; where presence fades and absence takes form, a single chair becomes a witness and a remembrance. remnant is a devised physical theatre production that speaks to the multiplicity of grief through the lens of a daughter's experience. Stuck, angry and lost she stumbles her way through the cracks of an empty house, and finds a seat at a lonely table. Flooded by the lingering ache of memories, she finds the beauty in surrendering and the points of light that follow after letting go.

About the Artists

Kayla van der Merwe and Kirsten Schouw are both physical theatre practitioners, theatre-makers and teachers, who met at Stellenbosch Univeristy while completing their undergraduate degree in Drama. They connected on their love and curiousity for movement and physical theatre. They have since created plays together, started a physical theatre company called Tumble Inn productions, facilitated workshops and choreographed for theatre shows.

Their practice focuses on embodied practice, while working from the body's experiences, memories and emotions. They are also curious and interested in interdisciplinary work, how movement meets sound and space to employ creative narrative.

remnant is a personal project that honours the lives and death of Ronald van der Merwe and Jason Schouw. It sheds light on the reality of daughters grieving father figures and how that exact grief can enforce joy and hope in a new reality.
