The Suit and the Dress is a powerful one-hander stage piece that delves into the
haunting realities of gender-based violence and the lasting scars of betrayal within a family.
Lerato carries the weight of her past and the pain of her upbringing. Her story unfolds in the solitude of her tin house, where she confronts the ghosts of her parents and the trauma that shaped her. She despises her late mother for turning a blind eye to the abuse she suffered at the hands of her father. When Lerato tried to speak out, her mother silenced her, fearing the loss of the family’s only provider.
Unable to bear the pain and betrayal, Lerato fled her home and built a life of isolation — a fragile refuge made of corrugated iron and broken memories. The suit and the dress, hanging in her small space, become haunting symbols of her parents — the father’s dominance and the mother’s silence.
Through her monologue, Lerato wrestles with anger, grief, and the desperate need for healing. The performance is raw, emotional, and deeply introspective — a reflection on the cycles of violence, silence, and survival that many women endure.
