About the Artists

Asanda Mqiki

Asanda Mqiki is a South African vocalist, songwriter, producer, musical director, and live show curator from Gqeberha, whose work blends jazz, gospel, soul, R&B, and African contemporary music. Known for her soulful voice, dynamic stage presence, and innovative productions, she has become one of the Eastern Cape’s most respected rising voices in live music and theatre.

Her musical journey began at an early age through the influence of her father, who introduced her to jazz legends such as John Coltrane. She later studied contemporary music at the National School of the Arts in Johannesburg and further developed her skills at the SABC RAPP Studios.

Asanda has shared stages with renowned artists including Sibongile Khumalo, Khaya Mahlangu, The Soil, and international Chinese jazz artist Coco Zhao. She has been a regular performer at the National Arts Festival since 2014 and received the prestigious Standard Bank Gold Ovation Award, becoming the only musician that year to win Gold. In 2022, her acclaimed production Vocal Explosion: Amazing Grace earned a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award. She is also the co-founder and musical director of INTLOMBE, which received a Bronze Ovation Award the same year.

Beyond performing, Asanda is an experienced arts educator and workshop facilitator. She taught at Stage World Theatre School from 2014–2016 and has facilitated workshops locally and internationally, including programmes supported by Concerts SA in Mozambique and workshops at the National Arts Festival.

In 2020, she ventured into broadcasting by hosting The Basement Jam on Bay FM. In 2023, she featured on the soundtrack of the acclaimed television series Shaka iLembe alongside artists such as Mbuso Khoza and Vusi Nova.
