Artist Biography

Lucas Bambo was born in 1964. His artworks are profoundly influenced by his childhood. Bambo grew up in KwaNdebele, northeast of Pretoria, where he spent his afternoons as a child painting and sketching. His work represents a likeness to the traditional daily rituals of the people in the area and their lives on a farm. The people of KwaNdebele are known to have retained more traditional elements of their culture and language. This attitude clearly reflects in the work of Bambo.

Artistic talent is linked with the Ndebele people with regard to their famous colourful beadwork and pattern painted houses. The aesthetic of those designs largely impacted Bambo and that feature has become prominent in Bambo’s signature style of landscapes. Julia Meintjes writes that, “Bambo’s use of line and pattern, characteristic of his style, creates a whimsical rhythm to his work that almost sings to us, encouraging viewers to reflect on Bambo’s narratives.”
