Growing up in the 80s, and living through apartheid, Dr Munsamy was oblivious to certain happenings in the country like the conscription laws. Later on in life he met and befriended a white man at university who shared his experience of the two years he was forced to spend in the SA army. As an Indian this was not forced upon. This control of someone's choices wasn't only confined to the army but also their sexuality. Being homosexual, gay, lesbian or queer was not an option that was allowed or openly accepted.

 

This play combines both these themes to create a brand new South African Musical theatre piece that looks at the whirlwind romance between two male soldiers in the army. The title is a play on the American saying in the army, don't ask, don't tell. This play is a tribute to those young men who took up arms for our country and the generation of LGBTQI+ individuals who were forced to hide their identities or face persecution of violence.
