Nompilo - a story of courage - is a beautifully inventive and accessible play for children 10 -14 and their families. It follows the journey of a young girl, Nompilo, who meets a predator, the Jackal. The story follows her and her friends into the judicial jungle where they encounter a number of characters who help to ensure that justice is done! The play combines physical theatre and allegory to create a world that allows children to navigate challenges while recognising the power of their own voices.
Developed in partnership with the South African Chapter of the International Association of Women Judges, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, and the Department of Basic Education, this ASSITEJ South Africa production is touring to schools and communities across the country and has already been seen by well over 10 000 learners, with different teams of performers working in local languages. The play is about to be released as a storybook by local publisher Cover2Cover.
Funders have included the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sports, Western Cape, the Social Employment Fund and the NAC PESP fund, as well as those already mentioned.
