In this new musical by emerging director and choreographer Mandisa Qwesha, a collaboration between Hout Bay's Ingoma choir and Amoyo dance group delivers a poignant portrayal of a father-daughter relationship.
Set in a 1980s rural township, this coming-of-age drama unfolds as Afrika anticipates her 18th birthday, yearning for her father's return from the mines — a wish fraught with the reality that many never come home. Meanwhile, her father grapples with the challenges of masculinity and isolation in the mines.
Through a fusion of spoken word, dance, and choral elements, the production delicately explores themes of masculinity, maternal sacrifice, and relationships. This heartfelt narrative resonates widely, providing a compelling reflection on the complexities of family and societal expectations.
