African Crossroads Musical is a powerful and thought provoking musical theatre. The production explores a wide range of important issues facing the African continent including the impact of Western culture on language, clothing, food and traditional practices (CULTURAL IDENTITY). LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE is also a theme and issues of corruption, and the self serving leadership of many African countries is key.

About the Artists

Shakes Kgafela, is a multitalented events manager, artist manager, theater production practitioner, musician and music educator with a passion for gospel, classical and jazz music. His musical journey began at a young age, and he is proficient on both the piano and saxophone. Along with being a music tutor and writer, he is a versatile artist who can perform various music genres.

 

Under his record company, Shakes Music and Projects, he has released four albums, showcasing his musical prowess. He has graced the stage with renowned South African artists such as Joyous Celebration, Keke, William Sejake, Sipho Makhabane, Rebecca Malope, Tshepiso Mpotle Sbu Noah Lebo Sekgobela, and Benjamin Dube. Beyond his performances, Shakes is the founder of Shakes Music Academy, a developmental institution that nurtures young emerging artists. He has perfomed at National Arts Festival Fringe, Mahika Mahikeng Jazz Festival, Taung Cultural Festival.

 

His contributions to music have earned him nominations for prestigious awards like the Ingoma Awards and Mama Awards. Additionally, Shakes has served as a reservist at the South African Police Service (SAPS) North West Provincial Band for marching band and orchestra. He also extends his expertise to schools, providing voice training for their SACE school choir competitions.
