Winner of The Special Jury Award at the recent Bitesize Theatre Festival in London, The Moon Looks Delicious From Here, is a feast of theatrical delight and pathos in which themes of identity, heritage, and sexuality are explored through the eyes of a first-generation South African.
International award-winning multidiciplinary artsit and playright, Aldo Brincat is that first-generation South African. Born of Mauritian, Egyptian and Maltese heritage in mid-60’s South Africa, Brincat, along with his family, find their maturing years playing out against the backdrop of a country in turmoil.
Aldo Brincat’s award winning smash hit, The Moon Looks Delicious From Here, is a 70 minute, largely autobiographical solo performance, driven by a loving father and son - each from different eras and motherlands. Here, Brincat plays an array of characters in and around a fragile young nuclear family - some foreign, some local - all of whom are finding or losing themselves in the ever-changing political landscape that is South Africa. Language, religion, ambition, sexuality, and political leanings are brought into sharp focus as our two lead characters fight off ‘otherness’, while attempting to assert themselves into a volatile new country. Key moments in their lives are juxtaposed against powerful developments in South Africa’s history during the 70s and 80s and, as the effects of apartheid (and its homophobic policies) begin to reach boiling point, family ties threaten to tear apart.
The Moon Looks Delicious From Here is universal in its theme, particularly at this time when the intersectional knock-on effects of migrancy, sexuality, heritage and identity are brought increasingly into our consciousness.

About the Artists
Aldo Brincat - Playwright and solo performer
Brincat’s primary career in the performing arts, began as a small child growing up in a family of stage magicians. Later, Brincat sat under the tutelage of the legendary Jacques Le Coq in Paris in the late 80’s, after which, Brincat toured Europe, Scandinavia and Russia as a freelance ballet dancer. Upon his return to South Africa, Brincat established Brincat Productions, an ad-hoc theatre company which focused on original, socio-political work, community theatre initiatives, and site-specific activations. During this time, Brincat received an invitation to perform for His Excellency, Nelson Mandela, on his birthday in 1997; and an invitation to showcase his environmental theatre work, Woza Waste Water, at the World Bank in Washington D.C., in 2000. In 2018, Brincat was commissioned to write a theatre piece, Light, for Ian Khama to celebrate his rise to the Presidency of Botswana. Brincat has been nominated for, and won, several theatre and community initiative awards, and was voted by the Mail & Guardian (SA), as among The Top Five Stage Performers of the Decade, 1999 – 2010. Brincat’s theatre career served as the foundation for his recent expansion and immersion into the visual arts. In 2018, his epic photography exhibition, Foreign Nationals, was invited to the Brunei Gallery at SOAS, at the University of London. Brincat has since completed his postgraduate degree in Fine Art at UCT’s Michaelis School of Fine Art (Distinction), and a Master’s in Visual Arts at Stellenbosch University (Cum Laude). To date, he has had multiple solo visual art exhibitions in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, England, India, and Sweden. His solo performance, The Moon Looks Delicious From Here, won The Special Jury Award at the recent Bitesize Theatre Festival, at Riverside Studios, London.
