About the Artists
"MY NAME IS SYLEEZ BY THE WAY"
Siliziwe Jako, known as Syleez, is a poet and percussionist from Alice, Eastern Cape. Introduced to poetry by his primary school teacher, Syleez began performing in 2017 after moving to Gqeberha. This qualified Electrical Engineer and self-taught percussionist fuses his indigenous Xhosa poetry with modern instruments played by his band, Ubuntu Makwande. Special thanks to Mr MM Swaartbooi for igniting Syleez's love of spoken word.
SYLEEZ's accolades include winning the 2020 Recite You Own Poetry competition and performing in England. He's shared the stage with South African celebrities like Unathi Nkayi, Khanyisa Bunu, and Aubrey Qwana. Syleez participates in the INSPIRE A STUDENT movement, touring South African schools with renowned author Bandile Magabili. Recently chosen among poets for the UMYALEZO Poetry Project at the Mendi Arts Centre.
