THE MUFFINZ
The Black Power Station

The Muffinz, South Africa’s premier live music outfit first released music to critical acclaim 11 years ago, with their album “Have you You Heard?” Amongst other accolades, the album and the performance of the repertoire earned them a Silver Ovation Award from The National Arts Festival in 2013.

The session showcases most of the favourites that made The Muffinz a top-of-mind band in South African households. The band’s timeless music catalogue will be embellished with a choice of a few of the band members’ favourite South African cover songs.

The band is still keeping fans waiting on a 3rd Album, releasing singles every few years. With our increasing repertoire, fans can expect to hear a few new songs, Umsebenzi Wendoda, Soundcheck, and Ghetto as firm favourites, while our cover versions of Hugh Masekela’s Market Place, and Brown Dash’s Vum Vum are sure to tickle both nostalgia and the senses. A recently popular, single, titled You’re the one has been doing well on streaming services and radio and will no doubt be heard.

About the Artists

It’s been 11 years since the release of their 19 track double album debut ‘Have you Heard?’, which received criticial international acclaim, and The Muffinz, a five-piece guitar-inclined band dedicated to live performance is not about to stop. In a dance entranced South African industry, The Muffinz continue to provide an aesthetic for those who prefer their music live and soulful.

Ask each member of the band how they define their music, and their responses are as varied as their personalities. Sifisp Buthelezi, ‘Liberated Afro Retro’ is more fitting. Lead electric guitarist, Simphiwe Kulla terms it ‘Eclectic Soul Trip’. Drummer, Keke Mabusela notes that there’s evidence of growth in their music and performances over the years even though the music remains familiar.

At the 2012 Metro FM Music Awards, an annual ceremony celebrating local artists who’ve made a notable imapct on the music industry, The Muffinz were nominated in the Best Newcomer and Best Group Categories. They took home the title for the latter. That same year they received four nominations for the esteemed South African Music Awards, recognised as the leading music ceremony in the country. Their efforts and talent were noted in the best newcomer, best group album, best RNB/Reggae/Soul Album and Album of the Year categories.

The Muffinz received a standing ovation at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. They toured Norway and performed at the Doha International Jazz Festival. The guys have also appeared on stages in Mozambique, Swaziland, Algeria and the DRC. An accent in their career was being billed to perform at the Apollo Theatre in New York. The show was sold out. While in the City, they filmed interactions with locals where they posed the question that ultimately became the second album, ‘Do What You Love’. An organic campaign aimed at provoking and propelling people to pursue just that – doing what they love, as the gents continue to do.

They continue to make music and work together, running their publishing company, Aural Sense, while exploring their individual talents outside of the band.
