Sakhile Simani is an Mdantsane jazz trumpeter whose music celebrates the evolution of communal jazz practices into a multicultural and multidimensional experience, process and product. His music is rooted in the principles of communal jazz as a subset of sharing, interchanging and negotiating music from the bandstand to communities. He aims to inspire, empower and educate through his music and explore ideas of identity in musical communities and the symbiotic relations that are created.
‘People of my Community’ was composed during the Covid-19 pandemic with the intent, he explains, to restore ‘hope and love to my community during all the uncertainty’. He believes that though he may not have many resources, his instrument is his voice which can be used to inspire the people of his community and the people of Mdantsane, the Eastern Cape and the country at large.
