Jazz / DSG Hall

In the 1990s the Durban campus of the then University of Natal was exploding with young jazz talent, drawn to the innovative jazz programme pioneered by Darius Brubeck, who had established the first university jazz programme on the continent in 1983, battling political and logistical obstacles. Neil Gonsalves, now Director of Jazz Studies at UKZN, Bernard Ayisa, a saxophonist who returned to his native Ghana to stimulate its jazz economy, and Natalie Rungan, now a doctor of jazz and renowned teacher, were students gigging together in this melting pot. They reconnect nearly three decades later with younger musicians, all with their own connections to the Durban jazz scene.
