The Ward Councillor
Theatre / Princess Alice

A gripping and thought-provoking exploration of the unsettling reality of political assassinations within the context of South Africa. It sheds light on the disturbing trend of politicians resorting to violence to secure or maintain positions of power, highlighting the urgent need for change.

The narrative revolves around the protagonist, John Phakhathi, a dedicated ward councillor seeking a second term. As audiences delve into the story, they witness the unfolding events leading to the fall and tragic demise of John Phakhathi. The plot unravels the dark and perilous world of political competition, where the stakes are high, and the consequences are often deadly. Inspired by true events, "The Ward Councillor" confronts the audience with the harsh truth about the lengths some individuals are willing to go to secure their political ambitions.

The play becomes a platform for reflection on political systems' ethical and moral foundations and the need for a more transparent and peaceful approach to leadership. As the audience bears witness to the disturbing occurrences and tragic fate of John Phakhathi, they are prompted to question the socio-political landscape and consider the collective responsibility in fostering a political environment free from violence and corruption.

The Ward Councillor serves as both a cautionary tale and a call to action, urging society to unite against the destructive forces that threaten the democratic process.

About the Artists

Promise Nyalungu is a Limpopo-born entrepreneur, actor, writer, and art activist passionate about promoting inclusivity and talent development in rural and township communities. In 2017, he founded Struu Artzz Entertainment, a Media and Entertainment Company dedicated to providing opportunities for creatives from under-represented backgrounds. Armed with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in International Relations from the University of Venda and a Certificate in International Business Administration and Leadership from Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University, Germany, Promise is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Honours in International Relations at the University of Venda while serving as an Innovation Champion for Local Economic Development at the University's Institute for Rural Development.

Promise's journey into the world of art began in primary school, where he was first introduced to theatre by his teacher, Mrs. Montally. This early exposure ignited a passion that continued to grow during his time at the University of Venda, where he volunteered as a director and writer for the university's drama club and arts society. Recognising the lack of inclusive creative spaces in South Africa, Promise founded Struu Artzz Entertainment to provide a platform for rural and township creatives to showcase their talent and promote diversity, equity, and entrepreneurship.

In 2020, Promise's dedication and impact were recognized when he was awarded the Student Entrepreneur of the Year award and the Existing Student Business with Social Impact award at the Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Entrepreneurship Awards. Under his leadership, Struu Artzz Entertainment has experienced significant growth, with a 108% increase in income and the creation of numerous employment opportunities for young creatives. Through incubations, exhibitions, road shows, and festivals, Promise and his team have empowered over 150 youth to explore their talents and pursue their dreams in the arts.

Despite his achievements, Promise faces ongoing challenges, particularly in maintaining a stable cash flow for productions. However, he remains committed to his vision of touring theatre productions for disadvantaged youth in rural communities and promoting indigenous storytelling through performance arts.

In addition to his entrepreneurial endeavors, Promise is an active member of the Next Generation Leaders initiative, where he collaborates with other young leaders from around the world to advocate for higher education reform and community development. His contributions have been recognised globally, earning him a place among the Top 40 Global Leaders and opportunities to participate in conferences and programs hosted by prestigious institutions such as Tufts University, Harvard Kennedy School, and the Kettering Foundation.

As Promise continues to make strides in the arts and entrepreneurship, he remains grateful for the support of organizations like the SAB Foundation and looks forward to a future filled with opportunities to inspire positive change and uplift marginalized voices through his work with Struu Artzz Entertainment.
