The Masks is a resistance and protest theatre play. It is performed by 1 actor portraying two characters. The two characters find themselves living in environments which constantly reject them because of the lives they lead. The play reveals themes such as betrayal, ignorance and self-discovery. The play is performed in both English and Sesotho. It is portrayed in an interesting poor theatre style.
About the Artists
ARTISTIC PROFILE OF KHAUHELO MAIKHI
Khauhelo Maikhi is a University of the Free State Drama and Theatre Arts graduate. He was a nominee for Best Artistic Achievement from the University of the Free State (2013). Mr Maikhi was awarded with the 2023 Sunday World Unsung Hero Award in the category of Community, Sports, Arts and Culture. He is a writer and producer of Pina Tsa Koma on which he partnered with the Performing Arts Center of the Free state (2022). He is the writer of LESEDI, a show he co-produced with the Performing Arts Center of the Free State in (2019). He produced LESEDI again in 2020 in partnership with the Performing Arts Center of the Free State for digital viewing. Khauhelo is a writer and director of The Masks (Free State Schools Tour 2023), which was part of the incubation program at the Performing Arts Center of the Free State (2017). The Masks was later chosen to be part of the Vavassatti International Festival at the South African State Theatre in Pretoria (2018). The Masks later was performed at Mmabana Cutural Center in Thaba Nchu in 2021. In 2023 The Masks had the privilege to tour the Free State performing for Creative Arts learners in schools. Khauhelo Maikhi was a director for Here Comes Freedom With Trouble for Mangaung Cultural Festival Theatre Program (2015). He was also an assistant director for Love, Crime and Johannesburg (2017) and Sophiatown (2016).
