Captured in Silence is a tragic drama that delves into the traumatic experiences of Lizwi Mlotshwa, a sixteen-year-old girl betrayed by her own grandmother, Mashenge.

After the death of Lizwi’s mother during childbirth, Lizwi is left in the care of Mashenge, who eventually sacrifices her granddaughter’s well-being in exchange for groceries, money, and the promise of a better life.

The play shines a stark light on a harsh reality in many South African villages, where powerful individuals exploit cultural traditions and economic hardships to control the lives of vulnerable people. The drama escalates as Lizwi is forced into an abusive relationship with an older man while she is still a schoolgirl. The play poses a difficult question: Is it right to use cultural customs to manipulate others for personal gain? Through the story of Lizwi, the production addresses gender-based violence (GBV), exposing the disturbing truth about how women and children are often commodified and their rights stripped away under the guise of tradition.

The creators of Captured in Silence were driven by a mission to confront the dehumanisation of women and children by those in power. In many cases, the loss of a parent, particularly in rural areas, leaves children vulnerable to exploitation, often being sold or manipulated rather than protected by society. Through this production, they aim to spark critical conversations around these issues and challenge the dangerous misuse of tradition and power.
