Hymns & Camdeboo Double Bill
Theatre / Amazwi

This is a combination of two productions "The Hymns of A Sparrow" which got a standard bank ovation award in 2023 and "Camdeboo".

The Hymns of a Sparrow is a comedy with a touch of drama. Set in the rural areas (eKupheleni), it tells the story of Babu Mngadi who is constantly fighting surrounding cattle owners because of their cattle eating from his garden. Babu Mngadi’s sudden tragedy explores grief and the hardships of letting go of those you love and hold dear in your heart. The story is narrated by a 10-year-old Simlindile who takes the audience on the journey of Mr. Mngadi’s constantly changing situation. The storyteller is accompanied by the sign language interpreter.

Camdeboo is told through poetry, music and movement. “Camdeboo” by Ayanda Nxumalo traces vignettes of Sara Baartman’s life and its mirrors and parallels in modern society. This play is written in a modern way to teach the younger generation about Sarah’s life and struggle.

It is named Camdeboo because it was the name of the place where Sarah used to live in the Eastern Cape before she was taken overseas. The play starts when she was still living in South Africa and continues when she was taken overseas for exhibition.

Ayanda said she chose to write her debut play about Sarah because she has realised that many women get annoyed when men praise them, calling them by their body parts, especially bums or calling them Sarah when they were their love interests. “Sarah lived in the 19th century but even today, men in Mzansi still use her name to praise women when they are looking for love. Not every woman wants to be praised and pursued all the time, especially when she has many things to do in life. Many of us get annoyed, and that must end,” she said.
