Christopher Truter, a child of 1976
Green Leaf Films
Film

Carmelita Truter is a seasoned activist from the coloured township of Bontehuewel, Cape Town - her activism sparked by the brutal death of an uncle she never got to know. Carmelita was barely 5 years old, when her uncle Christopher, 15, was killed by a policeman in 1976. For years she has been campaigning to keep the memory of her late uncle alive, not only in Bonteheuwel and Cape Town, but in South Africa and the world.

Through Carmelita's journey, Christopher's sister Rose, and some of his schoolmates, we learn the tragic story of Christopher Truter, who sold newspapers to supplement the family income. He wanted to be a lawyer and help his family out of poverty. But on 25 August 1976, he was shot during student protests in Bonteheuwel. He did not die immediately, but fought bravely under a coma until he died several days later. The brave Carmelita remains steadfast in her commitment that there should be a memorial built on the spot where her uncle was shot - because she believes that he too is a hero of the struggle against apartheid.
