Seek Body Contour is a movement and poetry short film, exploring trauma, healing, and reconnection through the body. The film is told through the composition of vignettes and is inspired by somatic dance practice. It is deeply concerned with how womxn of color navigate social and cultural surveillance, male validation, and a myriad of other standards and demands. The contours mentioned in the title refer to the lines that map the experiences and emotions for how womxn live in their bodies. All of the womxn who participated in the creation of the film have contributed to sharing how they disturb, complicate, excite, and add weight to gendered spaces.

About the Artists

Director: Marcia Peschke

Marcia Peschke is a writer and movement artist whose work interacts with themes including identity, representation, and womxnhood. Her creative practice allows for collaborative exchange, and is multidisciplinary, dabbling in poetry, circus arts, and dance. Marcia’s poetry has appeared in publications by the Los Angeles Poet Society Press, and Chasing Dreams Publishing. She has written and conceptualized performances focused on community engagement and embodied movement. Marcia has performed in and created work for the Red Eye Arts Festival, Project C Art Party at Rebel, and Rebel Live Action: Eco Art Festival, the National Arts Festival, and the Seoul Culture Club Arts Festival. Seek Body Contour is Marcia’s entry into film as a director and conceptual artist. The film was screened at the Contact Dance International Festival 2024 (Toronto, Canada) and will make its South African debut as part of the National Arts Festival vFringe.

Boipelo Seswane 

Boipelo Seswane is a South African creative artist currently living in Daegu, South Korea. Her collaborations have included various projects in the areas of writing, theatre, art creation, and modelling. Her process has always included marrying aspects of these, sometimes through different iterations. By continuously discovering the layers of how we relate through our place in society, Boipelo’s work explores questions around belonging, community, and worthiness, as well as what we tend to keep and also leave behind in the process of building our lives while possibly honouring where we came from. Her work has, through the recent years, taken form through leading the workshop that produced Black in Asia, as well as Creative Direction to produce Powerful Asian Moms, both anthologies published by Spill Stories, a publisher run by Black and Asian women; writing for Gwangju News and Bracket Magazine; as well as returning to the stage/performance. Hannah Esther Jankó-Barrios

Hannah Esther Jankó-Barrios is a student, filmmaker, and aerial dancer of Guatemalan-Hungarian immigrant background who grew up in the United States and currently resides in South Korea. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a student at Ewha Womans University. 

 

She has been a makeup artist, makeup director, and coordinator for local film projects and fashion shows in Madison, Wisconsin, as well as the key makeup artist for a Hollywood indie film. She has written and directed three short films including the 3D short film "Flow" screened at the 2022 Busan International Short Film Festival. Her latest project is starring in “Seek Body Contour” which explores the lives of women of color in a foreign land through dance and poetry directed by Marcia Peschke.

 

After graduation she hopes to live in many countries continuing to work within the media industry. Her long-term goal is to create her own media company. As a global citizen, she aspires to create a platform for people from all over the world to be able to share their stories.

 

Simone Govender

Simone is a 5th generation South African Indian. She uses her role as an educator to raise awareness of these issues and is hopeful that her students will be able to create change in their societies. Simone has always served her community through the local church at which she has had the opportunity to work together with the youth in her community, involving them in drama and movement. She believes that art has the ability to mobilise individuals towards change and can help provide a voice to previously disadvantaged groups.
