Sikhohlwa Kanjani is an immersive and deeply moving piece. It explores the lives of three women and one man in the aftermath of the 1976 Soweto Uprising. The play is based on a collection of life history interviews with women and men who experienced the Uprising. Through the stories of Nomasonto, Lindi, Francina and Themba, the audience is immersed in the aftermath.
The themes that emerge are collaboration, exile, gangsterism and combative motherhood. The play shows how women found ways to resist the liberation struggle and how they were implicated in an all-encompassing battlefront of apartheid violence.
