STIMELA

Theatre / Rehearsal Room

Stimela journeys through the emotional and historical landscapes of South Africa’s migrant labour system. Inspired by the symbolic imagery of a train Stimela explores the stories of men who left their rural homes in search of work in the mines and cities, confronting themes of displacement, sacrifice, resilience, and hope. Through storytelling, the production captures the emotional toll of separation, the struggle for identity, and the unbreakable spirit of community.

This is an immersive experience that speaks to generations affected by migration and labour exploitation. It honours untold stories and revives the memory of those whose lives were shaped by the railways that once divided families but also carried the dreams of a better life. This thought-provoking play is not only a reflection on the past but also a dialogue with the present, asking: what journeys are we on today, and what are the costs?

Stimela is more than a play, it’s a tribute to history, a mirror to society, and a celebration of human endurance.
