Kwa-mhlaba nasemkhathini
University of KwaZulu-Natal
Theatre / Rehearsal Room

Kwamhlaba nasemkhathini is an ensemble-driven performance that excavates desire as both memory and possibility. We invite the audience into a space of listening, where longing is not rushed to resolution but held with curiosity. Through embodiment and play, we create a container for our desires to surface. Sometimes as dreams, sometimes as groans, finding shape in words. This is a space where we trace the roots of inherited longing; a place where desire is not only ours, but ancestral. Kwamhlaba nasemkhathini older women follow our roots by looking at us closely, their gaze a form of recognition, a silent remembering, a witnessing of continuity. Through their eyes, we encounter the intertwined threads of legacy, identity, and intergenerational knowing. Kwamhlaba nasemkhathini becomes a threshold space between earth and sky, body and voice, memory and invention. We do not seek answers, but embodiment. We do not chase dreams, but we honour them as manifestations of desire. In this space, to desire is to exist fully, audibly, and without shame.
