On the boundary of Limpopo, hidden in the vast, peaceful fields whose horizons extend infinitely, stands Van Vuuren’s farm, one filled with heritage, blood, and horror. It is not a farm in any conventional manner. It is a malevolent playground for the doomed, a hunting ground for men who introduce themselves as farmers but make a living through brutality, mastery, and willful erasure of workers under them.

 

This intense drama unfolds the life of a Black family, a mother, a father, and a son, who live and labour under the shadow of Van Vuuren’s farm. Having arrived in search of survival, survival here is a cruel illusion. Here, white hands tightly clutch the land and the law, and hope is a faint whisper lost in the cacophony of oppression. The mother, a strong and sharp-thinking woman, believed in books. She saw books as a path to freedom, but her search for freedom earned her a deadly fate at the hands of oppressors who attempted to muffle her voice. Her demise leaves a broken family: a son clinging to the pieces of her aspirations and a husband broken with grief and madness.

As the founder, artistic director, and CEO of the award-winning Live (T) and Recorded (x) Theatre Production, and Theatre Company, Mxolisi has carved an indelible mark on the theatrical landscape. His journey, a tapestry of dedication and artistic exploration, spans continents and resonates with the echoes of captivating performances. Mxolisi Masilela's story commences at the hallowed grounds of Windy Brow Theatre's performing arts center. It is here that he honed his skills as an actor, director, and playwright. The foundations laid during these formative years would serve as the bedrock for his illustrious career in the performing arts. The dedication to his craft led Mxolisi across the seas to the National Institute of Dramatic Arts in Australia in 2018. As part of a 12-week exchange program, he immersed himself in the art of ritual as performance, expanding his artistic horizons and adding a global perspective to his creative arsenal.

Among his notable directorial achievements is "Thula Thula," a remarkable creation that graced the Market Theatre in 2016. "Queen the Chosen Ones," another jewel in his directorial crown, earned a Naledi nomination in 2017. "The Asylum" further demonstrated his directorial prowess at the Ishashalazi Theatre Festival. "These Are Not My Shoes," a production that enjoyed success during the Tembisa Theatre Week, Joburg Theatre, and the Fiti International Theatre Festival in Mozambique, showcased Mxolisi's versatility as a director capable of navigating different cultural landscapes.

Gifter Ngobeni | Actor/ Performer

Gifter Ngobeni obtained his Master’s Degree (Cum Laude) in Performance Art from Tshwane University of Technology in 2023. He has a strong background in community development theatre, wherein he was awarded over 50 accolades for various categories such as, Drama, Music, Poetry and Dance. He is an expert facilitator and dramaturge, and has imparted his expertise in well-known festivals around Gauteng. Mr Ngobeni is an internationally acclaimed performer, having performed in Zimbabwe, Swaziland and Brussels. Mr Ngobeni is not only a theatre performer, he has also been professionally featured in television works, including commercials and has done radio drama. He is a stunt-man, who specialises in stage combat, clowning, stilts and jumper’s work. He is a festival curator, and has curated for the following festivals, Mothogola Arts Festival, Tembisa Theatre Week and Feast of the Clowns. Mr. Ngobeni is the founder of 4Play Theatre Productions and is also an associate Artistic Director at the TX Theatre.

In his years of practice and experience within the arts sphere, he discovered his niche and passion for teaching. Mr. Ngobeni is a former Dramatic Arts and Creative Arts Teacher from Alexandra High School. He then moved to a private institution of higher learning, City Varsity, where he taught major practical and theoretical specialization modules. Mr. Ngobeni is currently a professional part-time lecturer at Tshwane University of Technology. Mr. Ngobeni, was cast in two major film and documentary projects in 2024. He has published and presented academic articles at international academic conferences. He was recently invited at the University of California Riverside, for a two-week academic and performance residency. Mr. Ngobeni currently does radio drama with SABC Education.

 

Kgwadi Philimone Selolo | Actor/Performer

Kgwadi Philimone Selolo is a 21-year-old man, born and raised in Tembisa. Kgwadi has been in the art industry for over 10 years and is a dynamic and multifaceted talent with a passion for both acting and directing which has seen him featured as an actor and a dancer in more than 30 community theatre plays and dance pieces with different community groups namely Sello sa Tlou theatre group, Umzekelo cultural organisation, Marapo A Naga and The TX Theatre. Kgwadi has won multiple theatre awards for best lead actor (Hillbrow outreach school festival 2015) TX Theatre festival (Best supporting actor 2017), Best runner up actor (Hillbrow Outreach School Festival 2016), as well as best Cameo role (Hillbrow Outreach Festival 2017). Driven by their passion for the arts, Kgwadi is currently pursuing formal training in both acting and directing, enrolling in Tshwane University of technology. Kgwadi’s acting career has taken him to bigger stages internationally and locally, including The Goldsmith University (London), Market Theatre, State Theatre, Tin Town Theatre, The TX Theatre, Gymnasium theatre (NAF) and Bloemfontein (Pacofs). The following are some of his production highlights in the industry: These Are Not My Shoes (by Mxolisi 'The Great' Masilela), he received a Naledi nomination for best independent theatre production (2021), STEVOVO THE PUPPETEER (by Moruti Abednego Dlhamini), he received a Standard Bank Ovation Award (NAF), lead actor in LEINA (by Mxolisi 'the Great' Masilela). This production received four nominations at the Naledi Awards where Kgwadi secured a nomination for the best performance in a play for theatre plays staged in 2023. Kgwadi’s acting skills and passion for the craft has seen him securing 2 roles in film and television, Abomkhulu on ShowMax (2022), supporting lead portraying the character of 'Mahooks’ and  1st year (2024) Mzansi Magic portraying the character of Sizwe. He is currently collaborating with The University of California creating an international production titled (HA-YA) by Rickerby Hinds. Whilst at the institution, as a young, emerging director, he had the privilege of helming several notable productions. His directing credits include 'That Night of Trance' written by Ntshieng Mokgoro, 'The Injustice of the Innocent' devised by students, 'African Folklore' devised by the cast, and 'Table for One' written by Katlego Morobi, all produced in 2024. Additionally, he directed 'Waiting for Godot' by Samuel Beckett in 2023. These experiences have significantly contributed to Kgwadi’s growth and development as a director.  As they continue their journey in the industry of theatre, film and television, Kgwadi looks forward to exploring new opportunities for growth and artistic expression. They are eager to further develop their skills as both an actor and a director, seeking out challenging roles and ambitious projects that push the boundaries of creativity and innovation.

This play was inspired by The Red on the Rainbow written by Vice Monageng Motshabi. It is the result of thoughts and emotions—an unflinching confrontation with racial injustice, a cry against the continuous killing of Black farmworkers, and the silence that follows.
