HI-YA is an electrifying, multi-disciplinary hip-hop theatre production that reimagines the power of protest, sound, and memory. Drawing from the poetic force of movement, the urgency of beatboxing, and the raw emotionality of visual theatre (images tiblóit), HI-YA weaves together two revolutionary timelines: The Civil Rights Movement in 1964 America and the fall of Apartheid in 1994 South Africa.
Separated by decades and geography but linked by the shared DNA of resistance, HI-YA stages a dialogue between young freedom fighters from both eras. These composites of real voices from Tembisa, to the USA, discover each other across a mysterious rupture in time: a glitch in sound frequency that allows their worlds to intersect. It is through this sonic anomaly that history begins to loop, rupture, and remix itself. Blending elements of hip-hop culture, beatboxing as soundscape, popping and movement as embodied resistance, rap as testimony, HI-YA positions itself at the cutting edge of global performance art.
The stage becomes a liminal space: part protest march, part ancestral gathering, part DJ booth, and part battlefield. Images explode like political graffiti. Words ricochet like tear gas canisters. Every beat drop is a war cry, every silence a moment of remembrance. The production uses images tiblóit, a visual storytelling form that creates emotionally charged, physical tableaus, allowing the audience to witness history as if framed by memory itself. These striking stage pictures form the spiritual backbone of the performance, anchoring it in collective grief, joy, and resistance.
As the narrative unfolds, HI-YA resists linear storytelling. Instead, it fractures and remixes timelines in the same way a DJ scratches vinyl-ooping scenes of protest, loss, and triumph to show how history repeats itself when unheard. The Civil Rights activists of the 60s become mentors, ghosts and guides, for the youth of 1994 South Africa, and vice versa. What does it mean to fight for freedom when freedom is a moving target? What happens when voices from the past break into our present frequencies? A glitch in the system becomes a glitch in time. Through this sonic fault line, HI-YA dares to dream across borders and generations. It reminds us that resistance is never quiet, and history never sleeps.
HI-YA is more than a performance; it is a transcontinental vibration of memory, music, and movement. It speaks to the urgency of now by echoing the unrest of then. And in a world still divided by systems of oppression, HI-YA becomes a powerful invocation: a call to listen to the frequencies we’ve ignored, to dance in the spaces between struggle and healing, and to shout the names of those who dared to rise.
