50 years since Port Elizabeth actors, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, made history by winning the Tony Award, two young Port Elizabeth, now Gqeberha, based actors, Anele Penny and Fiks Mahola directed by Xabiso Zweni are bringing this classic alive.
The apartheid-era drama, which is based on a true story, is set in an unnamed prison that is evidently based on South Africa's infamous Robben Island prison. The Island centres on two inmates, one who is on the brink of release due to a successful appeal, and another who is destined to continue in prison for an extended period.
They spend their days engaging in fruitless physical labour and their evenings rehearsing in their cell for a performance of Antigone by Sophocles in front of their fellow prisoners. One actor portrays Antigone, who defies the state's laws to bury her brother, while the other actor portrays the uncle Creon, who sentences her to death for her crime of conscience. The play establishes parallels between the circumstances of Antigone and those of black political prisoners.
