KEMET – Black Lands / Alkamal Walkamal Almutlaq – Completeness and Absolute Wholeness
Asanda Ruda
Dance & Physical Theatre / Rhodes Box

KEMET – Black Lands is a powerful solo dance work by Asanda Ruda that traverses the complex terrain of generational alienation, political defiance, and personal emancipation. Rooted in Afro-contemporary expression, the piece explores the layered intersections of space, politics, and culture, offering a deeply embodied protest of the self. Moving beyond the confines of inherited cultural frameworks, Ruda challenges conformity and asserts an audacious, self-defined identity. Her body becomes a vessel through which echoes of the past resound — ancestral music and memory reverberating through movement — while simultaneously carving out new, uncharted possibilities of being.

KEMET – Black Lands is at once homage to historical legacies and a bold reclamation of space. It is a journey of liberation, where culture becomes both a question and a key, and the dance becomes a declaration of presence in a world that often marginalises difference.

ALKAMAL ALKAMAL ALMUTLAQ translating to Completeness and Absolute Wholeness from ancient Arabic, embodies a profound exploration of the eternal bond between the spirit and the soul.

Performed by three dancers, this piece delves into how these two elements interconnect to heal and revive the physical self, presenting the body as both a capsule and a temple that relies on the spirit and soul for wholeness and vitality. Through ethereal Afro-contemporary movement and symbolic rituals, the choreography becomes a lyrical meditation — inviting audiences to reflect on love, health, and balance. The trio of performers weave together their bodies and energies to give physical form to the unseen dialogue between spirit and soul, highlighting the collective and individual journey toward inner harmony.

Rooted in universal themes, the dance portrays the transformative power of unity and strength, exploring love as a catalyst for both sickness and healing. It poses intriguing questions through poetic dialogue: Can there be sickness without love? Is health sustained by being in love or being loved? The performance draws its title as a kind of prayer — a deep invocation of resilience and renewal — calling upon the power of spirit and soul to create wholeness and harmony in the body.

About the Artists

Asanda Ruda

Asanda Ruda is a visionary South African choreographer and performer whose work pulses with the rhythms of memory, resistance, and reclamation. From the community halls of Soweto, where her journey in dance first took root, to some of the most esteemed stages across the globe, Ruda has developed a choreographic language that is both deeply personal and powerfully political.

Her movement vocabulary is steeped in history—drawing from ancestral memory, Black feminist thought, and embodied forms of emancipation. A former member of the internationally renowned Pina Bausch Foundation, Ruda toured extensively across Europe, where her performances were marked by their emotional intensity and technical precision. It was during these formative years that she refined her interdisciplinary approach, blending contemporary dance with ritual, storytelling, and socio-political commentary.

Her critically acclaimed solo work, Kemet (Black Lands), marked a major milestone in her career. Developed during a residency at HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts, as part of a biennial Pan-African cultural initiative, Kemet explores themes of Black identity, land, and spiritual reclamation. The piece captivated audiences with its raw physicality and haunting poetics, establishing Ruda as one of the most compelling new voices in dance.

Ruda’s artistic journey continued to traverse in 2024, when she participated in the Itrotra Art x Connection’s Tokoloho Training Programme. This experience deepened her engagement with collaborative and cross-cultural artistic practices, reinforcing her commitment to transformative, community-rooted artmaking.

Currently, Ruda is furthering her research and creative practice in Paris as part of the Centre national de la danse x Cité internationale des arts residency. Her time in France marks yet another step in her ever-expanding artistic journey, as she continues to forge connections between the local and the global, the past and the future. As she carves out space for new narratives within the world of contemporary dance, Ruda remains rooted in her community origins—guided by the belief that movement is not just expression, but transformation.
