Road...It’s the place where we want to be, and the route that guides us there. It’s the journey that leads us to this destination, accentuating the experiences of life.
This work explores the journeys we take as human beings, the meeting points we share, and the experiences we encounter. The piece highlights the unity amongst man when challenges plague their paths, the undulating terrain that we conquer and the sense of achievement at the end.
The Road is performed by two male dancers, and exhibits the strong foundations of Afro-Fusion.
This work has received six awards in Germany and one in South Africa.

About the Artists
People with a deep love for performing arts know that it is the choreographers who create the backbone of every dance. Their role in the arts world cannot be ignored. This has never been truer than in the case of Oscar Buthelezi, a young South African born in the dusty township of Vosloorus on October 4, 1991. Now, at the age of 33, he is blazing up stages around the world with performance pieces that have already won him recognition and international acclaim.
Oscar choreographed the 2018 Global Citizens South Africa as well as the Color Purple which won him the Best Choreography Award for The Naledi’s. He has also worked with corporates, and choreographed the Simba advert and SAB concerts.
Buthelezi did a six month tour in Europe (2022) working with Robyn Orlin, performing in
France, Germany, Luxembourg, Toulouse, Italy, and Geneva.
In 2023 Oscar started the year working with Colin Law - TTTM company choreographing and directing Plays and Musicals, WANDA, STIMELA, PRIVATE PARTS and MR HARE for provincial tour across South Africa. These productions wowed audiences. He is also a Movement Director and a Choreographer for the new series of Shaka Ilembe Mzansi Magic and DSTV with Bomb Productions. At the same time, he did choreography for “Skin We Are In” for WindyBrow theatre.
In March 2023 he left for a European tour to Oslo, Norway and the whole of Holland. Together with Robyn Orlin he facilitated workshops at each and every city they visited while on tour. Following that, he went to Taipei and Turkey.
On the 5th of June 2023 Oscar Buthelezi won two Awards at the Naledi’s at the Joburg theatre for Best performer in a theatre and ballet category and also for best Production.
In 2024 Buthelezi worked with David Gouldie on corporate events. He is the Movement director and choreographer for Shaka Ilembe season 1-2-3 Series for Bomb Productions, a position which continues to the end of 2026.
Buthelezi is currently working on six different projects with different titles, including Road, touring with Robyn Orlin to Durban’s Jomba festival and to Johannesburg’s Market theatre, choreographing a new work for Tanzania’s Haba na Haba Festival, and creating a new work for The Market Theatre Laboratory.
He recently returned from Switzerland, London, and other places in Europe, where he was performing and teaching. He has resumed choreographing and music directing for Bomb Production and Multichoice Shaka Ilembe, and continue with this until October 2025.
Oscar is a versatile artist who is influencing the Art sector with a new energy and works
that are fundamental to the world. He also prioritises collaborating with different people around the world, giving and receiving for change.
