Play Things is South Africa’s hottest experimental performance space—where bold ideas are born and brave artists take the stage. Held monthly at Theatre Arts in Cape Town and regularly popping up at venues like The Masque Theatre, The Drama Factory, and the National Arts Festival, Play Things is where new voices and big names test fresh material in front of a live, supportive audience.
Founded at the beloved Alexander Bar and now produced by writer Cailyb Prinsloo and comedian Sophie Joans, Play Things has become a creative home for over 100 artists, offering an essential platform for experimentation, collaboration, and growth. Whether you’re a comedian trying out a new bit, a poet unveiling a personal piece, or a theatre-maker refining a work-in-progress—Play Things is the place to play.
The format is simple but powerful: no gatekeeping, just a stage, a mic, and an audience ready to witness something new. Past performers include rising stars and established names, with the likes of Lauren Beukes and Yaaseen Barnes having graced our lineups. The result is an electric, one-of-a-kind evening where anything can happen—and often does.
Artists consistently rave about the impact of this space:
“Play Things is such a fundamental need for artists! The work they do by giving so many different types of performance art a platform is incredible and integral to the growth and sustainability of performance in South Africa.” – Robyn Dunlop
“Creating art is scary... Play Things affords artists a safe, reliable space to play, craft, and learn. It was one of the main driving forces behind my one-person show.” – Samantha Carlisle
Come for the wild variety, stay for the vibrant community. Play Things is where performance lives, breathes, and evolves.
