Touching on ancient Japanese traditions, mythology, and the power of dreams, the show serves as a poignant reminder of the magic that is everywhere.

About the Artists

Cara Roberts

Cara Roberts has appeared on both screen and stage since her debut in Durban Poison in 2012. Notable roles include Renee in Fynbos and Mark Read in Black Sails (Season 4). She has starred in Think Theatre’s Shakespeare productions, where she played Desdemona in Othello and Ophelia in Hamlet. Roberts has also starred in KickstArt productions such as Charlotte’s Web, Sylvia, and Little Red. Her solo role in, The King of Broken Things has earned her numerous awards locally and internationally, where she portrays a young boy grappling with his father’s absence. She has performed in children’s theatre productions like A Froggie Fairytale and The Great Big Enormous Turnip. She has showcased her puppetry skills in The Place of Small Miracles, also a collaboration with Hiles and Taylor-Broderick, featuring direct contact and shadow puppetry, music, and visual effects.


Michael Taylor-Broderick

Michael Taylor-Broderick, a versatile artist, graduated with Honours in Theatre Technology from Natal Technikon in 1993. Transitioning from management to freelance lighting design in 1999, he has garnered multiple awards and extensive experience across theatrical mediums. He has been the Technical Director of the Hilton Arts Festival for the past 28 years and lectures regularly on Theatrical Lighting Design. Alongside his successful career as a lighting designer, he’s also a playwright, director, and writer, with acclaimed works over and above The King of Broken Things. Notably, his performance piece, “One Man One Light”; received international acclaim and was featured at prestigious events like PLASA and Prolight and Sound.Michael is the founder of Theatresmiths, a collective dedicated to storytelling using the medium of theatre. Michael works as a Theatre Lighting Sales Consultant for DWR Distribution.

 

Bryan Hiles

Bryan Hiles, a versatile actor in Durban since 1996, began his journey with Story Spinning Theatre in Cape Town. After studying drama at Technikon Natal (now DUT), he supported himself through clowning, face painting, and juggling. Returning to Durban, he amassed numerous stage awards, notably excelling in KickstArt pantomimes like Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella. His acclaimed roles include Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors and Panto in The Beauty Queen Of Leenane. Bryan’s Shakespearean contributions with ThinkTheatre range from set design to lead roles in Othello and Hamlet. His passion for Children’s Theatre shines in performances like The BFG and James and The Giant Peach. Alongside Peter Court, he crafted A Mariner’s Tale, winning multiple awards. With a rich repertoire spanning musicals, solo shows, and Shakespeare, Bryan continues to captivate audiences with his diverse talents.
