UNLEARN is a story about a young, vibrant, charismatic woman, Angel Mojapelo, who is an aspiring comedian. She suffers from depression and anxiety and it’s through her comedy that she tries to grapple with her everyday and triggering life experiences.

 

A child of divorced parents, she stands wrestling with complicated perceptions when it comes to relationships. The brokenness of her family becomes a challenge in how she navigates the world, both her private and public worlds. Her life spirals out of control when she is met with a life-changing experience.

About the Artists

MoMo MATSUNYANE | WRITER AND PERFORMER

Kgomotso ‘MoMo’ Matsunyane is the 2023 Standard Bank Young Artist award winner for Theatre. She is an award-winning actor, lecturer, playwright and director who has produced/ performed in numerous plays, films, and television shows since kickstarting her professional acting career in 2004. Throughout her career, her experience includes roles where she:
• 2020 - Performed “Converting Eviction” in Switzerland
• 2021 - Became the Head Writer of Hlakanyana, a new musical play produced by Madevu Entertainment and UJ Arts Centre & directed by the acclaimed director Janice Honeyman.
• 2022 - Performed in "If A Tree Falls” which was also directed by Janice Honeyman
• 2022 – Casted in Kganya, a production by Lulu Mlangeni (2020 Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance) for NAF. The production made a debut at the internationally acclaimed festival “Afrovibes”. It was also played at The State Theatre in July 2023.
• 2023 - Acted in a new sketch comedy show called ROSA directed by Kagiso Lediga currently streaming on Netflix.
• 2023 - Festival director for the acclaimed Zwakala Festival and mentored the 
winning group as the show took to the stage in October 2023.
• 2024 - “The Cry of Winnie Mandela” is played to a FULL HOUSE (sold out) at the Market Theatre, with two (2) extended runs due to high demand.


In a male dominated space, MoMo has cemented her place as one of the greats of this generation, she does not only create art for the sake of entertainment, but she makes impactful work that challenges the status quo. She gives a voice to the voiceless…an exceptional blueprint to young artists that are coming up in the industry, most importantly young women. Her career is preceded by an Honors Degree in Dramatic Arts from Wits University in 2012, majoring in Performance as well as Film and Television.


KHUTJO GREEN | DIRECTOR
Director, Actror, Physical Theatre, Practitioner, Activist, Published Playwright and a Perfomance Coach. Khutjo completed her Honours Degree in Bachelor of Dramatic Arts at Witwatersrand University in 2007. She majored in Physical Theatre, Writing and Performance.

• The Princesses of Askies Shem Street Received 5 Naledi Theatre Award nominations and won Best Supporting Actress –Tshireletso Nkoane (2022)
• Tartuffe won a Naledi Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actress (2018)
• Have You Seen Zandile? Received 5 Naledi Theatre Award Nominations and won Best Breakthrough ActressZethu Dlomo (2015)
• Animal Farm awarded 2 Naledi Theatre Awards for Best Ensemble and Best Production for Young Audiences (2015)
• The Line won a Naledi Theatre Award for Best Performance by Lead Actress- Khutjo Green (2013)
• The Justice Cameron Award for Human Rights and Social Justice- Khutjo Green (2014) for her work in Human Rights Activism

LETAGO MOLAPO | STAGE MANAGER
Born and bred in the dusty yet well organised streets of Marulaneng, Ga Sekhukhune in the Limpopo province, Letago la ga Molapo is an actor, storyteller, writer and stage manager. His love for stage management started in 2020 when he was cast for his first theatre show, Kgoši Sekhukhune The Musical. Upon going to The Market Theatre Laboratory in 2021, he started learning how to stage manage by assisting on shows such as Mongiwekhaya’s SkullKandy and Nomdumiso Msimanga’s Theatre Tink Tank. In his final year at the lab he was both cast and stage manager for Allistair Mcdowall’s Zero For The Young dudes directed by the former head of the lab, Clara Vaughn, and that year he was also appointed as the stage manager for the Art Cave’s Yes Let’s experimental Festival, which took part for the third time recently.


He worked with Standard Bank Young Artists for Theatre: 2023 - Theatre Duo-Khongolose Khommanding Khommissars, and 2024 - MoMo Matsunyane - Unlearning-Still. This year he also stage managed Philangezwi Nxumalo’s one hander, SONDA, which he has been stage managing since 2022, and he recently stage managed The Market Labs first year production, Afropocalypse, directed by Daniel Buckland.
