SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONAL JAZZ ORCHESTRA (SANJO)
Mandela Bay Theatre Complex in partnership with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality

Established in 2024, SANJO was launched to institutionalise the history and wealth of South African Jazz. This was a first step towards the greater vision of carrying Jazz music into the hearts of the music loving people, keeping the imagery and contribution of jazz icons alive.

SANJO’s repertoire spans various jazz styles, paying homage to jazz luminaries while giving opportunities to young talent. Each performance is a melodic journey, pulsating with improvisation and collective creativity, celebrating the genre’s power and cultural significance.

SANJO 2025 celebrates three segments, staring with Eastern Cape Jazz Classics of Soul Jazzmen and Matshikiza Brothers. The second segment celebrates the music of Siya Charles, the 2025 Standard Bank Young Award winner for Jazz, and the third segment pays tribute to the late Stompie Mavi who would have been 70 years old in 2025 had he not passed away on 17 January 2008. Stompie Mavi was born on 21 April 1955.
