Dumza Maswana's Umngqungqo Orchestral Experience
Dumza Muswana

Step into a world where music breathes heritage, memory, and meaning. This year at the National Arts Festival, celebrated baritone vocalist Dumza Maswana returns to the stage — but this time, he brings with him an epic ensemble for his most powerful performance yet.

Introducing The Umngqungqo Orchestral Experience — a breathtaking 20-piece orchestra, conducted by Sakhile Simani and musically directed by Mthokozisi Mabuza, with all musical arrangements crafted by the duo. Together, they deliver a transcendent symphonic celebration of indigenous rhythm, jazz, soul, and spiritual storytelling.

Joining them on stage is the soaring Kwantu Choir — a 40-member powerhouse ensemble from Makhanda, conducted by the exceptional Kutloano “Kepa” Kepadisa. Their harmonies, deeply rooted in choral tradition and modern expression, add a majestic vocal layer to an already unforgettable production.

Since 2014, Dumza has been a cherished presence on various Festival stages. But in 2025, he

commands the spotlight in a show unlike anything seen before at NAF — where orchestral grandeur meets the heartbeat of African tradition. In a carefully curated performance that draws from his acclaimed albums and introduces brand-new compositions, Dumza reimagines traditional isiXhosa melodies with lush arrangements and powerful choral collaborations. For a brief, unforgettable moment, he will also be seen playing the uhadi, the ancient Xhosa musical bow — an act of reverence and reclamation.

This is more than a concert — it’s a spiritual homecoming. A sonic reverence. A celebration of who we are.

"Although I am a musician, I am not in the business of selling music," Dumza says. "I’m in the business of redefining cultural conversations, reliving memories—ancient and personal—brought to life through storytelling and song.”

Come dressed in your finest African regalia, as Umngqungqo is not only a feast for the ears—it’s a bold, elegant celebration of heritage and pride. Join Dumza Maswana, the Umngqungqo Orchestra, and the Kwantu Choir for an unforgettable evening where rhythm meets reverence, and the past and future dance together in one majestic voice.
