EC CRAFT EXHIBITION | CRAFT MATTERS
Visual Art / Village Green

At the heart of the Eastern Cape lies a rich tapestry of creativity, heritage, and storytelling woven through the hands of its people. The Craft Matters Craft Exhibition at the Village Green Craft Market during the National Arts Festival is more than an exhibition — it is a celebration of identity, culture, and the living traditions of our communities.

As the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Eastern Cape Development Corporation, Eastern Cape Provincial Arts and Culture Council, OR Tambo District Municipality, local municipalities, and Amathole District Municipality join hands in supporting local enterprises, this collective initiative shines a spotlight on the extraordinary craftsmanship emerging from village, township, and urban economies across the province.

Craft matters because it preserves who we are. It carries the wisdom of generations, reflects our heritage, and tells stories that words alone cannot capture. Every woven basket, beaded accessory, carved sculpture, ceramic piece, textile, and handcrafted object represents the spirit of the Eastern Cape — its people, traditions, and way of life.

Visitors to the Village Green Craft Market are invited not only to explore and purchase authentic handmade artefacts, but also to engage with the makers themselves, learning about the cultural significance, techniques, and everyday uses behind each creation. From personal adornment and cultural practices to interior décor and functional household items, these crafts embody both beauty and purpose.

The Craft Matters Craft Exhibition offers an immersive cultural experience where art meets heritage, and where creativity becomes a bridge between communities and visitors from across the world. Through this vibrant showcase, we honour the hands that create, the stories that inspire, and the communities that continue to keep our cultural legacy alive.

Come experience the warmth, authenticity, and artistic excellence of the Eastern Cape at the Village Green Craft Market in Makhanda — where every craft tells a story, and every story matters.
