Matjieshut

Kraal is a two-part curation comprising a performance piece and the construction of an indigenous Matjieshut sourced from the Kamiesberge in Namaqualand. The curatorial team will begin building the Matjieshut near the Monument building on 25 June. Open to the public from 26 June until 4 July, this sacred space provides a dedicated, non-performative environment intended for rest, reflection, and dreaming, aligning with the curation's core mission for collective healing.

Jason Jacobs, the Standard Bank Young Artist for theatre, brings this curation as a call to participate in the present redress of colonial and historical wrongs. While honoring Indigenous Built Environments and technologies from the Kamiesberge, this initiative strives to create new spaces that empower the contemporary voices of indigenous communities.

Hendrik T Brandt, an elder from Nourivier, is part of the team to lead the construction in Makhanda and he will work alongside First Nations Indigenous Leader Jean Burgess, a Makhanda resident in the Eastern Cape. It will be taken down on 4 July, following a final private ceremony.

During the open hours between 9am-5pm people from the community and the festival are invited to:
a) visit the hut
b) read about the hut
c) share experiences in the hut, as part of our aim to reach as many people as possible

The presence of the Matjieshut transforms the act of spectating into one or restorative participation. By being there, you help keep this ancestral tradition alive for the future.
