“Earth, open up and swallow me. Perhaps, I may meet my forebears and they may wipe my tears”. In the face of the colonial threat many fearless people in Africa were ready to give their lives for resistance. “TIRO” zooms in on the life of one of them, Onkgopotse Tiro, who became the first across-the-border victim of the malicious Apartheid regime.
Moving from documentary to poetry and from history to the present time, the contribution of this important figure of the Black Consciousness Movement is remembered in a touching and enlightening manner.

Africa Melane, Chair, Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards
"...a moving testament to the power of art to educate and preserve history...a thought-provoking work that challenges conventional ideas about education." Amanda Wilson, Cape Town Today

About the Artists
AYANDA KA NOBAKABONWA
'In all walks of life, I believe, for a complete communication of an idea, nothing surpasses a dramatic representation of the idea you want to convey. I am an artist who is wholeheartedly open to growth on a daily basis. I am a tenacious and inquisitive, with an eye for uncommon angles and a drive to tell a story in a manner beyond imagination. Personally, I believe that as artists we are duty bound to always challenge the unchallengeable and inspire the uninspired by bringing to life stories that take one out of one’s comfort zone.'
By trade, Ayanda is a theatre maker, arts and crafter, writer and an art facilitator (shadow puppets). Over the years Ayanda has decided to pursue his love of art through storytelling and that love led him to Magnet Theatre to sharpen the skill.
