Musical comedian Céline Tshika did everything right in the immigrant child playbook: she stayed in school and got the degree. Then what? In a culture where feminism means walking off the graduation stage down the isle towards the man you met in church, Tshika is totally missing the mark. And not just because there’s no church man (there isn’t a man).
In her debut solo show, Céline explores being a model minority in a model-C high school, dating in your 20’s while carrying a healthy dose of religious trauma, and navigating life as both South African and Congolese—and also, neither.
From years being an underemployed actress, an underpaid writer and underdog sketch comedian, Céline has made a show as unpredictable as her career trajectory. Breaking from traditional stand-up into original songs, parody songs, physical comedy bits and a touch of drag, this show directed by acclaimed theatre-maker Sophie Joans is an innovative addition to the comedy offerings of South Africa.
With sharp wit and spicy lyrics that warrant an African Mother side-eye, the viral social media comedian delivers a heartfelt and comedic take on identity and expectations in post-Colonial Africa.
