About the Artists

Yahav: Artist and Activist

Yahav is an artist and activist, widely recognised as the lyrical force behind the duo Sonz of Law, alongside producer and beatmaker, Adon Geel. Hailing from Motherwell, the second largest township in the Eastern Cape, his socially conscious and thought-provoking lyrics reflect a profound worldview and a vision that transcends the limitations of the ghetto. Empowered by the magic of sound and words, he serves as both a speaker and a writer, capable of inspiring movement through the pulsating rhythms of percussion and drumbeats. Previously, he was the drummer for the now-defunct four-piece band, Usiba noNcwadi.

While many became familiar with his lyrical talent through Ghetto Youth Uprising’s Truth Music for the Listening (2011) mixtape and Sonz of Law's Day of the Lawed (2015), Yahav has contributed to various mixtapes. Notably, he participated in the Khulumani Support Group's international compilation for social justice against the legacy of Apartheid, titled Officially Offside (2010). He has shared the stage with some of Mzansi's most authentic artists, including Abantu, Iintloko Zeenyoka, Zubz, Stogie T, Ben Sharpa, Projektah, Def Boyz, Naked eYe, Smurfilles, Golden Shovel, and Yahkeem.

Since relocating to Durban, KZN in 2017, Yahav has scaled back on public performances but continues to engage in collaborations with other artists. He is now more focused on his family and activism. Together with his wife, Shaiyah, they advocate for the healing of previously disadvantaged communities of colour through conscious eating and positive lifestyle habits via their company, Vegan eKasi. Yahav is a dedicated husband and father who believes that strong and healthy families form the essential foundation for vibrant communities and nations. With a commitment to nurturing both personal growth and societal change, Yahav’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of Hip Hop. His work with Vegan eKasi is more than just a business venture; it is a movement aimed at fostering wellness and empowerment in marginalised areas. By promoting conscious eating and sustainable living, Yahav and Shaiyah are paving the way for a healthier future, one that honors both cultural heritage and environmental stewardship.

Yahav’s artistic evolution reflects his deep-seated belief in the potential of art to inspire change. While his public performances may have become less frequent, his influence continues to ripple through the community. Through workshops and mentorship, he shares his experiences and insights with the next generation, encouraging young artists to use their voices for advocacy and healing. His story is a powerful reminder that music and activism are intertwined, each amplifying the impact of the other in the quest for justice and equality.

As “The Return of the Cypher” approaches, Yahav’s presence promises to be a highlight, offering attendees a chance to witness not only a remarkable artist but also a dedicated activist who embodies the spirit of Hip Hop as a force for good. This event is more than just a celebration of music; it is a call to action, inviting everyone to participate in the ongoing journey towards a more just and harmonious world.
