The Black Power Station warmly invites you to join the third open discussion of Ubuhlanti: The Solution-Oriented Platform Experience, featuring Dr. Nqevu. This engaging event is inspired by an exhibition curated by Xolile X. Madinda, the founder and owner of The Black Power Station. The discussions will take place on July 1 and 2, 2025, at The Black Power Station.
Program Overview
This program will spotlight community members and cultural activists, creating a platform for knowledge sharing. Its goal is to unite industry professionals, practitioners, and scholars to exchange cultural ideas and explore alternative reeducation methods. We hope this initiative will provide valuable insights and cultivate meaningful connections among participants.
A primary aim of this initiative is to make a significant impact on local schools in Makhanda, where art programs for children and youth are scarce. At The Black Power Station, we strongly believe in the vital role of art within society, as it inspires careers and builds confidence among creatives. We are committed to shaping a brighter future for our town and country through the transformative power of art.
About Ubuhlanti
Ubuhlanti functions as a Xhosa gathering space, integral to a ceremonial and philosophical system that strengthens family and community ties to share, communicate, and address contemporary challenges. Inspired by traditional communal spaces for reflection, Ubuhlanti brings together elders, artists, and thinkers for intergenerational dialogue. Dr. Nqevu, along with a facilitator, will engage in profound discussions about healing, cultural memory, and creative inheritance from an African perspective.
This year’s session builds upon the impactful cultural initiative initially launched at The Black Power Station for a week of discussion, before moving to the University of Virginia in 2024. It now returns to Makhanda as an annual practice focused on community restoration and intergenerational learning.
Event Overview
During this gathering, Dr. Loyiso Nqevu, a distinguished cultural thinker and scholar of African spirituality with a particular focus on Xhosa culture and Amasiko wabantu Abamnyama, will participate in a dialogue exploring themes of identity, cultural reawakening, and the spiritual dimensions of social change.
The purpose of this event is to examine our culture and language as a framework for ubuhlanti, serving as an essential source for self-reliance and education. It aims to cultivate a tranquil space and address family issues beyond the commonly accepted ceremonial practices.
Dr. Nqevu brings decades of expertise in African theology, indigenous knowledge systems, and critical pedagogy. Xolile X. Madinda asserts that these insights enrich the platform of ubuntu reasoning, where thought intertwines with spirit and life discipline. Knowledge is intrinsically linked to land and lineage, while time reflects an African understanding of existence. Those lacking connection through technology may find it challenging to grasp the shared knowledge of nature, arts, and spirituality. The true essence of AI, as experienced by people, is not merely a construct; it is a reality we inhabit daily. This reality transcends mere information, nurturing a connection to the human spirit and life consciousness.
Anticipate a journey of reflective provocation, spiritual grounding, and collective inquiry through Q&A and open engagement. This experience goes beyond a simple lecture—it represents a return to life, a moment of remembrance, and a cultural reckoning.
